Radiopharmacy Department, Southampton General Hospital

This P21+ scheme involved the conversion of part of an old hospital kitchen area to form a new Radiopharmacy Aseptic Suite to enable the Department to be licensed by the MHRA (Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency).

Clean Rooms

The unit contains a number of ISO Class 4.5 (EU Grade A) isolators located within 5 no. ISO Class 7 (EU GMP Grade D) Pharmaceutical Clean Rooms. The Clean Rooms are provided with engineered controlled environments to minimise the presence and introduction of particulate microbial contamination into the medical products prepared within the facility.

The Department has a cascade arrangement of room air pressures between rooms to maintain the required air pressures regime and air change rates, each with door interlock systems. Each Grade D Laboratory Room has H14 Grade Terminal HEPA filtration. The new air handling plant and extract fan within the adjacent plantroom, provides conditioned air to the department.

A new BMS controls system provides control and alarm functions for the engineering systems, including critical room pressure alarms.
