Here are our ‘Top 10 Tips’ for saving energy and reducing carbon. These tips can be adopted by any Business.

 

01| Hearts and Minds

 

When reducing energy consumption and carbon, your most valuable asset is your staff. If they are aware of how to save energy, and are willing to ‘self-police’ the reduction in waste, then this is the most cost effective ‘energy saving’ resource available to you.

 

02| More Control

 

Turn off / turn down / close windows / provide shading – in conjunction with ‘Hearts and Minds’, and with no capital expenditure, significant savings can be made by turning off equipment and lighting, turning down heating thermostats, closing windows and doors in the winter, and pulling down blinds in the summer. Nominate someone to monitor how spaces are being used and control your systems.

 

03| Better Control

 

Updating heating and cooling controls, and their associated control philosophies, will bring great savings. Better control will optimise system performance and provide easier User control, thereby removing inefficient operation. Control systems also allow you to monitor and record system performance.

 

04| Existing Lighting Systems

 

Changing existing lamps for low energy LED replacements is not only good for carbon reduction, but they also last longer. They therefore, provide additional benefits through savings in labour and replacement revenue costs.

 

05| Revised Lighting Design

 

Changing to LED lamps will certainly bring savings in energy and money; but a more significant saving can be achieved with a new lighting design. Using more efficient LED luminaires, can also reduce the quantity of fittings required for the same lighting levels. Win win!

 

06| Lighting Controls

 

Fitting presence and absence detection to the lighting systems in any type of room is a simple way of overriding human behaviours and habits. It is a fool-proof way to ensure that lighting is not being left on unnecessarily.

 

07| Energy Metering

 

Availability of actual consumption data is key to ‘Hearts and Minds’ engagement. Once changes to behaviours and attitudes have been instigated, having real and up-to-date data to publish will help to ensure continued motivation.

 

08| Smart Meter Displays

 

Daily and direct display of consumption and cost is a powerful tool. It challenges people’s consciences and encourages them to achieve better performance. As a result, it reminds everyone to ‘turn off/turn down’ etc. (Item 2 ‘More Control’).

 

09| Insulation

 

Insulating hot water and heating pipes, reduces heat loss and ensures that heat is delivered to its destination areas as efficiently as possible. An added benefit is the reduction in unwanted over-heating in areas such as corridors and lobbies; thus improving the internal environment and reducing cooling loads.

 

10| Windows

 

Significant savings in heat loss and energy consumption, as well as improvements to internal comfort conditions can be made. Ensure windows open and close properly and seal correctly. If this cannot be achieved, and replacement windows are not an option, fitting secondary glazing can overcome these issues.

Replacement windows will provide savings, but the biggest improvements are made by ensuring windows are easy to operate; as a result, improve the internal environment encouraging better worker productivity.
